Easton Community Centre News
Community Corner Garden
The money that has been funding the corner garden over the last year is due to run out this december. After an open meeting yesterday evening it was decided that Jodie (who has been running the project over the last year) will produce a manual for maintaining the garden and we will keep the jobs to be completed in a calender in reception at the centre. Any members of the community are welcome to complete any of the maintanence jobs on the garden and to use our equipment whilst doing so.
We aim to get a group of volunteers who take on the task of maintaining and developing the corner garden so it remains such a great community space. There is a workshop there on Saturday 5th December which anyone interested can go along and speak to Jodie, she will also be available before the end of the year to train any new volutneers up.

Development on the Owen Square Park has begun
The park aims to be completed by March 2010 and work commenced this week (1st Dec). The design was produced after a series of consultations with the community at the community centre earlier in the year. Plans include keeping some of the existing play equipment but replacing other parts and making seperate play areas for different age groups. A plan of the intended development is up in the community centre for the community to come and look at.

Love Easton Exhibiton is now back in Easton and on display in the community centre
A proposal to turn land underneath the M32 flyover at Ikea into a market or skate park is another plan that features in a new exhibition showcasing what Easton residents want to see in the future.
The Love Easton Urban Design Task Group organised a series of events in October to find out what people thought.
The results are now on show here in Easton Community Centre.

The Love Easton Community Cafe in Stapleton Road served as a base for the month of activities, which included a street party, workshops and music events.
The views have been collected to create a document that sets out what the community wants from Bristol City Council and developers. In it, residents set out five 'visions' they have for the area.
They say they want a cafe in every community, they want to enhance the identity of the area, revitalise Stapleton Road, revamp green spaces in the area and transform Old Market.
Ideas for enhancing the area include turning the Stapleton Road railway bridge into an artistic hub; getting rid of the "crime-friendly" land in the middle of the Lawrence Hill roundabout in favour of a crossroad; and revamping the Easton Leisure Centre.

The exhibition features several of the documents available for visitors to flick through, photos of the consultation sessions and activities during October, models of the proposed plans for development and maps with tags attached to show people's favourite places in Easton.
Shankari Raj, co-ordinator of the project, said: "At the private viewing of the exhibition, we had the city development team from the council come to have a look.
"Our hope from now is that some of the ideas will go forward and be taken into account in future planning for the area. All of the things that came out of it are a conglomeration of people's feelings within the area.
"The major things that came out of it are things like the Lawrence Hill roundabout and the M32 flyover.
"People also really want to make sure the independent shops are kept."
The exhibition has some excellent ideas about the way Easton could be developed in the future, please come and have a look and contribute to this work.

Local Business VOSA (The Vehicle & Operator Services Agency) Come to the Community Centre to Tidy Up!
From The 9th September 2009
Alastair Peoples, CEO and Diversity Champion for VOSA, has set us the challenge of becoming more involved in local community activity. The aim is to encourage VOSA staff to become involved in their communities, Directors took part in a local initiative to help make the Bristol and Bath cycle path a better and safer place for everyone whilst at the same time bringing people from all backgrounds together to better understand their perspective on day to day life.
VOSA has offices at nearly 100 locations across the UK and we want to work with our local communities to our mutual benefit. Whilst this initiative gave the Directors an opportunity to give something back to the community.
VOSA aims to build on the achievements of this day. Having established important relationships we are exploring ways in which we can work together, for our mutual benefit, in the future. For example we are meeting with community group ‘Inclusive’ to discuss opportunities such as sheltered work placements to help those with mental health problems back to work and also the provision of recruitment advice e.g. application forms and interview practice sessions at the community centre.
This was a joint initiative with the Avon & Somerset Police, Easton Community Centre, Community at Heart and Bristol Parks Department. If your organisation would like to adopt part of the cycle path and help take responsibility for making it a safer and nicer place for the local community please contact:
